Footsteps of Dali.... Day 2

The church spire and shape at Collioure is famous, amongst others, for inspiring Dali. Before heading out for the surrounding countryside, we walked around the church and took time to appreciate the scenery along the coastline.

And walk out along the breakwater....

To take in the view of the town resting in the early morning light.

Then it was time to leave beautiful Collioure and start our climb up the surrounding hillsides.

Of course one of the most difficult parts of any walk is finding your way out of town. After a few false starts, we were finally on track for the day.

Whilst the first part of the walk was mainly through scrub, woodlands and the still exploited cork trees, the weather was cool but pleasant and there were beautiful views along the way. Wonderful!

Our trip notes were something like this...." After the second vineyard that you will skirt to the right you will find this path again on the ridge, slightly to your left. The path skirts twice a new electric fence and a new track.....Take this path (due south) - we did have the necessary compass - towards a house. When you have reached the courtyard, go over a chain that is there to stop vehicles and continue on the flat, along the path up the Col de Taillefer." And so it went.

These instructions were precious. We could not afford to lose them or to have them blow away. There was a word warning in our trip notes about the Tramontane - a strong wind - but it would not trouble us today.

In the Footsteps of Dali....Day 1

From Madrid, we spent a day travelling by train (three changes of train) to go back into France and the seaside town of Collioure. Arriving tired, we dragged our luggage - yet again - from the train station to the hotel.

As it turned out, where we were staying was not far from where these photos were taken.

Our flagging spirits restored, what a treat it was to be here and to see first hand the area that is famous for its many artists, fishing and much more.

Light was fading, but we still were able to walk around the bay and take in the scene.....just magical.

Winter Light on the River Seine

When we first arrived in Paris, despite the rain, we were able to walk along the roadway next to the River Seine and enjoy some of the beautiful winter light.

It did not take long though before the swiftly flowing Seine had risen over its banks. By the time we left for Madrid last Friday, the waters had started to subside again and the road and walkways had come back into view.

Over Lunch in Montmartre

Our Tour de Dali continues.

Over lunch in Montmartre after visiting Espace Montmartre Salvador Dali with my little notebook from the gallery to write a jotting or two about what we have been up to.

Espace Montmartre Salvador Dali has about 300 of Dali's lessor known drawings and sculptures on display.

Dali Exhibition at Centre Georges-Pompidou

The Centre Georges-Pompidou is within easy walking distance of where we are staying in Paris and we have finally made it to the Dali exhibition - not just once but twice.

The artwork above is in the square next to the Centre and the photo below is of the crowd starting to build up before the museum doors opened. We had already booked our tickets so we were able to get into the Centre and out of the cold quite easily. By the time we came out four hours later, it was quite a different story!

It is an amazing exhibition of Dali's work and an opportunity to see works from museums across the world including some we will be going to in Spain and the USA.

Winter Sunset in Paris

Whilst most days we have been in Paris have been cold and grey, it was a delight to see this wonderful winter sunset in Paris on Monday. This photo was taken outside the Musee du Louvre.

Salisbury Cathedral: Reflections

I have waited some time to visit Salisbury Cathedral and was not disappointed. The above photo is of reflections in the font used for baptisms.

The Cathedral is also home to one of the four remaining originals of the Magna Carta sealed by King John in 1215. An inspiring visit!

A real fan of Ottolenghi's cook books I couldn't pass on the opportunity to taste the real thing. First up was dinner at the new Ottolenghi restaurant NOPI followed by a visit a few days later to experience more gastronomic delights, this time some take away from Ledbury Rd, Notting Hill.

And yes that's me all rugged up and grinning like a cheshire cat as I walk away with my little bag of goodies to delight the taste buds. Thanks for the pic Lexie.

Merton College Oxford

While travelling, we sometimes come upon places or events by chance that make that experience so much more enjoyable and worthwhile. And so it was on Tuesday when we took a break from London to spend the day in Oxford and happened upon the Exeter College Organ Recital Series.

As part of the Series we heard Organ Scholar and third year music undergraduate Anna Steppler play Mendelssohn, Bohm, Bach, Vierne and Reger in the Merton College Chapel. Wonderful! And what a superb setting in which to enjoy Anna's recital.

Tea & Subterranean

Part of a window filled with interesting chemical apparatus bubbling away and enticing passers-by to call in and try. Unfortunately we did not have time as we were racing off to the theatre. Definitely a place with a difference.

Walking towards Tower Bridge

Staying at Limehouse, we took the opportunity to see a different perspective of London by walking the few miles along the Themes Path to our planned destination, Tower Bridge and the Tower of London.
