Celebrating Women in Fremantle

An informal community art group has been advocating for work that redresses the public under representation of women and women artists in Fremantle. At the moment, nearly all of the public artworks celebrate men and men's achievments. The City of Fremantle has taken up the challenge and six designs celebrating women have been shortlisted for exhibition. Three of the six designs are shown here: Lace (Louise Elscot) and below on the left, Yarning Circle (Sharyn Egan and Fiona Gavino) and Sisters (Bridget Norton). All works are being exhibited at the Fremantle Art Centre. Visitors to the Centre are invited to nominate their preferred design for a proposed new public artwork for Fremantle. It will be interesting to see which of the six pieces will be chosen. I am still undecided as to which of the six designs I will nominate and will post the other three designs later in the week.

  1. Of these I like lace. Like the initiative as well.

  2. Great photos! Must be a very interesting exhibition.

  3. Great idea Rae and about time. In this group I like Lace and Yarning Circle. Look forward to seeing the others. Are you enjoying this rain, so wonderful and fresh after the last week.
