Down by the Dam

It was time to get on down to the vineyard to catch up on spraying but before setting out to complete the day's chores I enjoyed the serenity of a walk by one of the five dams on the farm photographed here.

For Alan and Helen

I received a message this morning from Scottish friends Alan and Helen who have just arrived back to bleak skies in Glasgow after being in Perth for three weeks. Alan and Helen, I hope that today's photo reminds you of brighter skies and brings a little of Western Australian sunshine into your day.

Stories from The Canning Stock Route

The Canning Stock Route Exhibition at the Perth Convention Centre closed on Sunday, but the vivid memories of the artwork and the heartfelt stories told remains.

Purlpa is my mummy's Country near Mungarlu. My mother walked with my three brothers right down to Jigalong. On the way they stopped at Sunday Well. Whitefellas used to shoot people here and just leave them lying on the ground. [My family] were just travelling through here. When they saw the white people shooting they ran away to Puntawarri.

Old people don't talk too much. I didn't know my family were bush people till I did that painting with Milly. Now I want to know everything.

This is the Canning Stock Route. This is the big hill here where, a long time ago, my mother, father, my sister Amy, and my brother used to live. We would sometimes climb up on that hill and see drovers. They put the government well [26] next to Tiwi jurnu [soak] when they were building the stock route.

George Street, East Fremantle

George Street, East Fremantle is one of the places I enjoy visiting every now and again to find out what is new at the art deco store, enjoy coffee with friends, look for that unusual gift or to soak up the local architecture.

King of Oysters

With oysters, wines, beers and ciders on the tasting menu there was something for everyone at the Inglewood Hotel this afternoon. Here the King of Oysters, Jerry Fraser is busily shucking yet another half dozen oysters for hungry patrons.

On the Beach

Driving back from Fremantle today, above the house tops I could see the sails from the kite surfers at Leighton Beach. Too good an opportunity to miss, I turned off the highway to take a closer look. Whilst I would love to "have a go" at this sport, seeing the strong westerly wind this afternoon made me think just how taxing it must be on the arms and legs, let alone the rest of the body. Kite surfing looks like an exciting water sport but I am sure I am set to remain an onlooker from the shores.

Colouring My Day

I was given this beautiful bunch of roses and thought it best to capture them before today's hot weather - 37C - did!

Monument Hill, Fremantle

A warm evening, little westerly wind and a wonderful light at sunset over the City of Fremantle and the Memorial to Fallen Sailors and Soldiers. Like many people visiting the memorial park, I enjoyed a quiet interlude, stopping to take in the view of over Fremantle city and the harbour before heading back into the evening traffic.

Did You Tag Off!

Last week after a longer stay than expected in Perth City, the car parking costs were much more than I wanted to pay. So yesterday it was back to public transport. The railway works well getting into and out of Perth and as Christmas approaches, certainly easier than finding a place to park the car. This photo was taken at the Daglish Station. And yes, I did remember to tag off!

A Taste Boost

The vibrancy of this small juice bar in Hay Street, Perth was a delightful contrast to this afternoon's overcast skies.

Point Walter

It was a little hazy in Perth today but still a wonderful day to enjoy being around the Swan River. Point Walter is a favourite spot for water sports, a leisurely walk on the sandbar and family picnics. With friends Alan and Helen visiting from Scotland the drive around the river was an ideal way to see Perth, the riverside suburbs and to take some relaxing breaks along the way.

Visiting Hyde Park Today

Driving past Hyde Park I could not resist the opportunity to stop and walk by the water's edge under the trees. The morning sun was warm and under the trees a wonderful cool reminded me of summer days yet to come and invited me to linger. This is one of my favourite views in the park. A popular park with families and a busy place to go to on weekends but today, well just perfect!

Queen Street

After being away for six weeks I took time to meander through Perth City today. Old buildings in William Street are being renovated or the facades retained while newer and sleeker office buildings are constructed at the rear. Just to the west some of the buildings in Queen Street have been refurbished bringing new life to the street while some parts are left untouched. I like the juxtaposition of old and new but most especially the interesting streetscape and friendly feel created where the buildings are only a few stories high.

Couldn't miss visiting the beach for today's sunset. Jet lag must be fading.

Back at the Beach

I enjoy travelling and equally enjoy arriving home. Back in Perth I headed for my favourite spot this morning - City Beach. Strong squally winds almost rivalled windy Wellington. Still it's wonderfully refreshing to be outdoors and great to be back in 'the West'.

Death and Diversity

The weather during my time in Wellington has been diverse - sun, light rain, wind (lots of) and there always seemed to be a cloud formation on the horizon that could gather force and change at almost any time. Yesterday however the sun was shining and the wind calm, well at least for the morning while I was exploring the Wellington waterfront area.

Sky Blues

I walked by Bill Culbert's sculpture Sky Blues during the day without looking up but at night it was hard to miss!

Freer Gallery of Art

My last Washington DC post from the Freer Gallery of Art where I spent time enjoying the gallery's collection and taking time to relax in this serene courtyard.

Wednesday, November 2, 2011

I will hopefully now be settling into a couple of days in Wellington New Zealand after almost a week in Washington DC - a great place to visit and this time to experience a whole range of weather including snow while out and about last Saturday. And it was only the end of October!

One of the many Museums I enjoyed visiting in Washington was the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden. Roy Litchenstein's Brushstroke outside the Museum is shown here. Inside, Andy Warhol's Shadows was on exhibitionWhat an amazing installation with over eighty panels of Warhol's work that disappear around the corner of one exhibition space to continue in the next. With more than a dozen different hues and paint that has been applied with what looks like great gusto, the  resulting streaks and trails of paint add to the Shadows images.  Photography was not allowed in the exhibition space but there was no shortage of photo opportunities in the sculpture garden outside.

One WTC is Now More Than Halfway to the Top

Each month City Daily Photo has a Theme Day. For November the theme is Fences. During my time away I have seen many fences: on the beach at Cape Cod, around farms I visited or passed by on my travels, on the High Line and Brooklyn Bridge walks and in many other places. This one though was the most significant.
